Our Lab Report

Hypothesis: Our Hypothesis for this experiment is that if the amount of flex seal affects a plants growth, then the more flex seal that is applied to the seeds the less chance they have to germinate/grow.


Control: Our control group is Brussels Sprouts that are not covered in flex seal and are grown with standard water


Variable: We have multiple variables,  


Justification of hypothesis: Flex Seal can be used for other variables of life such as fish (Koi Ponds), and we wanted to see if that would carry over to plants.


Why did you choose this as your hypothesis?
We wanted to see the absolute limit of a seeds possible growth.
Procedure:


Materials: 16oz Flex seal, 16oz Monster energy drink, 4 paper towels, brussels sprout seeds, four plastic bags, Water, Red cups, Screwdriver, tweezer, syringe.


Steps: 1. Gather items
2. Open the flex seal with screwdriver.
3.Stir the flex seal with monster energy in red cup with a pencil.
4. Dip some seeds in monster flex concoction with tweezer.
5. Apply 10ml monster flex to the paper towel in the bags with the syringe.
6. Wait for results.



Data and Results:
Control: 2.45 inches high
Flex Seal: 2.3 inches high
Monster Flex: N/A


Conclusions: You can’t grow anything with Monster Energy as it literally kills everything it touches, but by using only flex seal the plants can still manage to grow.

What do you know about seed germination?
We know that in the process of seed germination, the seed starts to develop from a small seedling into a full grown plant. This is most commonly done when the seedling sprouts and starts its life.

What do you want to know about seed germination?
We’d like to know how long the process of seed germination takes, and what outside variables have on this process. We want to see if we can lengthen or decrease the amount of time that it takes.

What did you learn about seed germination?
During the conduction of our lab experiment, we saw that we could encase a seedling inside of Flex Seal and that it would act as a protective layer; The seed actually grew through this layer and was able to proceed germinating in a normal way. We also saw that the mixture of Flex Seal and Monster Energy Drink as a source of nutrients will kill the seed.

Fertilization occurs in flowering plants through the process of fertilization. The center of the flower has long thin filaments with anthers at the top. This is called the stamen. Four pollen sacks are located in the plants anthers which contain MMCs, Micro Mother Cells. Each of the pollen sacks produces eight pollen grains, the sperm cells from the MMC. Blog Post #5: Lauren Shearer (By Colin Mccombs)

For the Story of the Seed project I interviewed my very close friend Lauren Shearer. She talked about all of the experiences that she had while she was working on the project and her thoughts on the project. She learned about the different variables tat need to be considered while growing the plants. The process of a growing plant differs with each plant, if you change pretty much anything when you tried to grow multiple plants. She was amazed at how fast and tall their "Control group" plant grew. It not only went quick, bit also with the right amount of soil;water, it would be healthy. Sadly, what surprised me that shouldn't have, was that the last pot with Dr Pepper did not grow at all. Lauren was forced to stop and think harder when her team had to figure out the watering schedule for our plants. Blog Post #8- A Matter of Selection (Jesse Zalk)

1)  The   Brassica oleracea plant, a seemingly boring specimen, does manage to have variation in itself. My team, seemingly lazy at the moment, did not want to join me to the garden excursion, so I went by myself to measure data. The data I decided to record was the width of the Brassica Oleracea and the length of the leaves on the plant (Both Kale and Brussel Sprouts). I decided that the leaf lengths had more variation then the plant height. Here is the data that I collected.
